Did you know?

  • By high school graduation 2/3 of youth are regular drinkers and 2/5 are frequent binge drinkers (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism).

  • Ninety percent of teens who drink do so in the form of binge drinking, which is when a person drinks 5 or more drinks in a short amount of time (about 2 hours) (Miller, et. al, 2007).

  • Nearly 6,000 people under 21 die each day from alcohol-related injuries (Hingson and Kenkel, 2004).

  • 40 percent of kids who start drinking before age 15 will become alcoholics at some point in their lives (Institutes of Medicine - National Research Council report "Reducing Underage Drinking: A Collective Responsibility." 2003).

  • The three leading causes of death for teens are car crashes, homicides and suicides. Alcohol is a leading factor in all three (CDC, 2005).
