What should you do?

  • Be informed.  1:5 girls have an eating disorder.

 

  • Trust your instincts.  If you know a problem exists, act now!

 

  • Listen, don’t judge or threaten.  Show your teen that you care, are concerned and want to help.  

 

  • Eating disorders are complicated.  Try to listen and see things from the affected person’s point of view.

 

  • If your teen is not ready to hear your concerns, remain persistent and available for when your teen is ready for your help. 

 

  • Know your teen’s growth history relative to their weight-for-age or height, as well as their age appropriate BMI score.

 

  • Be a good role model for your teen by teaching them good self-care and nutrition habits. 

 

What should you not do?

  • Know your limits.  You are not a substitute for professional care.

 

  • Don’t oversimplify.  Telling your teen to “just eat” or “just stop throwing up” isn’t the answer.

 

  • Don’t overwhelm your teen.  Go to them one-on-one so they are less likely to feel attacked and are more likely to be open to hearing what you have to say.

 

  • Don’t judge.  Judgmental comments may drive your teen farther away from getting the help they need.
